The Gambit is really into books right now. This is great, of course, in that reading is very important, too many kids watch television nowadays, blah blah blah. But on DVDs, you can just hit rewind. It’s a bit different to have an insistent toddler smack you with the same book you’ve already read six times today until you cave and lift him into your lap and go through the words with your eyes closed.
With me, he reads:
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar (“On Friday he ate through five oranges, but he was still hungry.”)
- Chicka Chicka ABC, a short board-book version of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (“Whee!” said D, to E F G, “I’ll beat you to the top of the coconut tree!”)
- The Monster at the end of this Book (“YOU TURNED ANOTHER PAGE!”)
The Chef tells me The Gambit is also deeply enamored of Goodnight Moon, and knows when she’s faking. And, of course, as long as The Wookiee is reading it, The Gambit will listen to Arcane Power for good long stretches.
I’m very proud of him for having such good taste in literature (well, Arcane Power might not fall under that category, but he’s quiet and handles it well, so whatever.) No Blue’s Clues or Thomas the Tank Engine yet, and I maintain a desperate and probably naïve hope that they never will be. The rotation is getting a little thin around here, though. Anyone got toddler book recs?

The Gambit was pointing frantically at something yesterday while we were at Target. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom was lying randomly on a shelf. He was upset that I didn’t immediately grab it and read it to him, but my hands were full of socks.
There’s A Monster At The End of This Book was one of my all time favorites.
I have a soft spot for Grover.
The Chef — You are obviously a horrible, horrible person. Shame on you for not dropping the socks and reciting Chicka Chicka sixty times. (By the way, he said Chicka today, but I’m not sure whether he did it by accident.)
Shaba — Grover is the man. Especially in Super Grover form.
